HOW CAN WE CONTAIN NON-HOSPICE SCRIPTS ORDERED IN THE FACILITY?!

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED THIS SCENARIO:

It’s time to review your hospice invoice and notice that your COPD patient in the long-term care facility has apparently been ordered non-hospice covered medications that aren’t congruent with the Hospice Plan of Care related to the patient’s terminal lung condition…

After further examination of the medications, you find they have been ordered by a provider at the facility, rather than by the hospice providers and team…

WHAT TO DO NOW?!...

Well, the good news is that PDC can help by calling the pharmacy and attempting to reverse the medications.
However, that is not the issue. That’s simply a “band-aid” solution and will likely happen every month for that patient who remains in the facility. We need to find a way to prevent this from happening – become more proactive rather than reactive.

FOR THIS POST, I’D LIKE TO ASK FOR HELP RATHER THAN PROVIDING ADVICE!

I think now is a perfect time to begin to band together as hospices all over the country – let’s brainstorm together and help each other out! The problem is not only the money that the hospice is having to spend on non-hospice covered meds, but it’s also a disservice to patients to provide them with medications that aren’t directly related to their palliation. Let’s see what we can do to help!

For this post, I’d like to ask for help rather than providing advice!
